CHALLENGES OF PIG FARMING IN ZIMBABWE

The Sourthern Region of Aftrica is having to face a lot of challenges when it comes to pig farming. Most pig farmers in the Southern Region of Africa are young farmers who are just penetrating the farming industry, they face a lot of challenges such as infrastructure, clean water sources, finances and the major one being that of getting enough feed for their pigs.

The challenge is so bad to an extent that at times these farmers face droughts and swine flu and this costs them a lot of losses. Take for instance in Zimbabwe there is a great potential for pig farming as a business but due to the factors mentioned above, the farmers are struggling a lot with little or no goverment assistance. There are several pig boards in Zimbabwe but they too have little or no resources whatsoever to help out the new and up coming farmers.

The farmers run their projects from their personal finances and this leaves them with the dilemna of its either they eat or the pigs eat? Farmers in Zimbabwe try their level best to keep afloat by making so many sacrifices as we are all aware that Pig feed in Zimbabwe is one of the most expensive feeds in the Region as there is so much shortage of food.

Most of the feed that is sold in Zimbabwe its either imported as high prices or manufactured localy but bare in mind that yellow maize in Zimbabwe is as good as gold and its expensive hence even when locally made the feed will still be expensive.

Some Farmers have resorted to feeding their pigs concetrates and small maize particles recovered after the milling of maize call "Makresh" going for $3.00 per 20litre bucket, these obvious are less effective when it comes to feeding but they do help out in times of need as they are cheap to buy.

Beer Spent is also now being sort after as it has great nutrients and can be complimented in pig feed and its also not that expensive to get but it will cost to transport it to your farm as most of the breweries are located in the industrial areas away from farming places.

Farmers have also tried to supplement feed costs by farming their own maize but they are let down by the droughts and so forth and so these are the challenges they face.
These are just a few challenges they face will will dwell on more challenges in the next article.
